Traditional IRA RulesA great retirement starts with a great plan, tools, and an understanding of the rules. Overlooking one IRA rule can throw your retirement plan out of whack. I put together this resource to give you everything you need to know about the traditional IRA rules (and probably some stuff you don’t) so your retirement plan goes off without a hitch.

    Why A Traditional IRA?

A traditional IRA (Individual Retirement Account) is one of many retirement savings tools available to help you reach your retirement goals. Still, an IRA is just an account. Once you put money in there, you have to do something with it and there are many possible investment options you can use. Ultimately, your retirement plan will decide which invests you use. Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

    The Best Season

The summer heat brings way to cooler weather, the changing of the leaves, and the best season ever. That’s right, Football Season! The kickoff officially started last night for college football and extends to Saturday. The NFL follows that up next week. If you’re as avid a fan as I, that means fantasy football drafts, weekly Pick Em games, squares, and survivor pools. Whether it’s for fun or money, it’s the bragging rights we want (money is a nice consolation prize) and a winning season for our favorite team. And I wish you luck. It’s gonna be a busy weekend. • How Do Closed End Funds Work

    August 29, 2013

    Jon

Closed End FundsThere are many types of mutual funds, yet all of these funds can be broken into two main groups. Most of the funds out there are open end funds. These are the typical managed mutual funds and index funds you’d find in a 401k or invest in through an IRA. Logically, the other group is closed end funds. Before you invest your money you should know how these funds work.

What is a Closed End Fund?

A closed end fund is a mix between a mutual fund and a stock. A closed end fund invests in a basket of assets just like any mutual fund does, but it trades on an exchange like a stock. Continue Reading…

  • The Biggest Mistake Investors Make

    August 27, 2013

Biggest MistakeLet’s face it, there are many mistakes investors make. Trying to single one out as the biggest, or worst mistake ever is tough. I’ve made my share over the years, including this one. What’s worse, this has played a consistent role in past bubbles and busts.

It goes by many names: chasing returns or rearview mirror investing. The biggest mistake investors make is the belief that what happened in the past will continue into the future. It’s an affliction many of us deal with all the time. But there is good news. It’s curable.

    Investing With Blinders

This happens with stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and index funds. The hottest of each gets the most attention and the money follows. These are often misconstrued as safe investments, can’t miss opportunities that inevitably fail. Continue Reading…

  • Happy Hour: Nasdaq Outrage, Why Politics Works, & Ballmer Retires

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

    Nasdaq Outrage

There was an outage on Wall Street yesterday. Not your typical power loss either. The Nasdaq was offline for 3 hours due to a software malfunction or glitch as they called it. If you’re not sure what 3 hour glitch looks like, these charts show it clearly. Of course, the big gap on the chart below also shows it.

In the process, Nasdaq did a terrible job of communicating the problem.

Personally, the outage didn’t affect me because I don’t trade. But it was still a problem. It affected all the options and futures of Nasdaq traded securities, as well as, any ETFs with Nasdaq traded stocks. Continue Reading…

  • Where Do We Go From Here

    August 22, 2013

    Jon

What appeared to be a great start to the year has since cooled off. The S&P 500 has had a great year in only eight months. Bonds became a real downer in a very short time. Europe is showing signs of life. Emerging markets have done so poorly, for so long, it might be the next big opportunity. The Fed has done nothing since it announced a planned future possibility of tapering. And the market impatiently throws temper tantrums in the hopes of finding out.

Caught amid all that, investors are scrambling to make up the difference. In the end it still comes down to proper allocation. As is always the case, the question becomes where do we go from here? Continue Reading…
