Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour!  Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

    Retirement Action Gap

I was recently asked to comment on the state of retirement savings.  Really the lack of retirement savings and what it might take to change the trend.  The article asks a very good question.  What do you think it would take to close the action gap and get people to take control of their financial future?  Head over and see what the experts had to say.

    Sand Castles

Before this summer comes to a close, I give you one last reason to hit the beach.  Build the perfect sand castle.  A group of scientists at the University of Amsterdam took it upon themselves to find the perfect sand castle recipe.  I’m not sure what they were smoking, but we can safely say science has come through again.  For all those who have failed to build a beautiful monstrosity like the one pictured in the article, you are one step closer to perfection. • Best Stocks For The Housing Market Turnaround

    August 9, 2012

    Jon

Housing MarketThe housing market is finally showing signs of life.  Which opens up a range of long-term investment opportunities for your money.

One of the worst performing sectors of the S&P 500 since 2008, has been one of the best performing this year.  It seems time was the only thing holding back the housing market.  The companies that made it through the downturn were forced to cut costs, streamline, and are stronger for it.

The reality is, the housing market plays a huge role in the U.S. economy and has been a big drag so far.  But that’s what happens when a bubble bursts.  Housing prices plummet and new constructions grind to a halt.  This affects material suppliers, manufacturing, retailers, and banks.  All of which are potential long-term investments.

An improving housing market will just add fuel to the economy.  New homes have to be livable.  New home owners will accessorize.  That means buying new grills, furniture, lawn care, window treatments, appliances, bedding, carpets, paint, and any other improvements that make a house…a home.  That’s money being put back into local economies boosting things further.

There still are investment opportunities in the housing market.  It may be over bought at the moment but we’re still in the early stages of this long-term growth story. Continue Reading…

  • What Is A Stop Order?

    August 7, 2012

Stop OrderThere are many ways to trade stocks or ETFs.  Most of the time, it takes a simple market or limit order to get the job done.  But not always.  Sometimes you need to add a condition when placing an order.  A stop order or stop-loss order is the tool to use.

Conditional orders have a place in every investment strategy.  When used properly, a stop order can help automate trades, enforce investment disciple and most importantly act as insurance.

    Stop Order Defined

A stop order is a market order with a twist.  It’s defined as:

A stop order, also referred to as a stop-loss order, is an order to buy or sell a stock once the price of the stock reaches a specified price, known as the stop price. – SEC

Once that stop price is reached, the stop-loss order becomes a market order and the stock is sold at the next available price. Continue Reading…

  • Happy Hour: International Beer Day & HFT Gone Bad

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour!  Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

    International Beer Day

Beer has its own international day and it’s on August 5.  International Beer Day was started back in 2007 as a way to celebrate with friends and give back to the brewers and bartenders around the world supplying beer lovers with hoppy goodness.

With 334 celebrations in 46 countries this seems to have built a following.  Plus, it’s a great excuse to open your backyard and celebrate all things beer.  It’s also a good reason to make Monday, August 6, International Hangover Day.

    High Frequency Trading Gone Bad

It’s back in the news in a big way this week.  That’s HFT or high frequency trading.  Knight Capital Group, a publicly traded company, lost $440 million in 45 minutes thanks to a “computer glitch.”  I like how Wall Street and the press throws around “computer glitch” like their Windows OS locked up again and it just needs to be restarted. • All Index Funds Are NOT Created Equal

    August 2, 2012

Index FundsAll index funds are created equal.  That’s what many fund families want you to believe.  But it can’t be further from the truth.  The difference is big enough, it could force some passive investors to actually do some work.

Unfortunately we might want to put some time into researching index funds before investing in them.  It seems that not all index funds are created equal.

Specifically, similar index funds are not equal when it comes to performance.  Which really doesn’t make sense.  Aren’t they supposed to track the same index?  Invest in the same stocks and/or bonds?  Have the same annual performance results? Continue Reading…

  • Happy Hour: STOCK Act Loophole & The Dream Team

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour!  Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of money.

    STOCK Act Loophole

The STOCK Act or Stop Trading On Congressional Knowledge Act was passed as an effort to reestablish trust in the government.  The law was set to end the chance members of Congress and other government employees could profit from nonpublic information.  Which it did, but the STOCK Act has one tiny, little loophole.

The Act doesn’t include spouses and children.  Basically a Senator can find out some juicy information and tell their spouse or children who can then trade on the information.  Or better yet, access their spouses accounts and just trade themselves.  This is all thanks to a last-minute rewrite of the law.  At least they were looking out for number one.
