    Jon

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of  money.

    The Beatles

There was a great article last week in Bloomberg about the Beatles Vs. the Taxman. It recalls their rise to fame and the terrible financial deals along the way. And the constant battle to avoid the taxman.

In a world where musicians and bands are their own business, making more off their image than their music, it’s interesting to see where it all started and how far it’s come. And it makes you wonder how it would play out if the Beatles were just getting started now. Continue Reading…

Do You Need a Financial AdvisorI fully believe anyone can become a do it yourself investor. That you can make educated investment decisions over the course of your life. I also believe that most people need a financial advisor too. Here’s why?

There is the time and knowledge requirement to consider. Sometimes you just need a coach or teacher to get started. Or maybe you just need a second opinion to see if you’re headed in the right direction. Finally, investing is just one piece of a bigger financial pie.

The right financial advisor can guide you through the obstacle course of your life. Make adjustments as your family grows, put the kids through college, retire comfortably, and protect everything in between. It’s a lot to keep track of and manage on your own. But a great financial advisor will keep you focused on the big picture. Continue Reading…

Welcome to the end of the week and another edition of Happy Hour! Just sit back, relax, and enjoy your end of the week roundup of all things interesting in the land of  money.

    March Madness

The biggest drain to worker productivity started yesterday. The theory is that we are so glued to the NCAA tournament that it’s impossible to get any work done. Well, that’s not entirely correct. A new study found that, while we love watching the games, we can still do two things at once.

Of course, the best option is just get your work done early and take the day off. Wings and basketball at the sports bar sound so much better than streaming games in the office. Continue Reading…

Preferred StockWhen people refer to stocks, its almost always common stock they are discussing. But it’s not the only type of stock you can own. Preferred stock is the other possibility and it’s popular with income investors.

    Preferred Stock

A company has several options when it needs to raise cash. It can take on debt by borrowing from a bank, it can issue bonds, or it can issue stock.

Issuing common stock comes with one big disadvantage. It dilutes shareholder value which never goes over well with existing shareholders. Continue Reading…

CyprusOnce again, Europe has taken the center stage in the global economy. This has become an annual rite of passage.

Europe has taken upon itself to slowdown the market’s great start with another debt crisis. In other words, Europe has taken their ball and gone home. Again. For the fourth time. Such a tease. And we keep falling for it.

This year’s debt crisis is brought to you by Cyprus. Did you know Cyprus was in the European Union? Me neither. And it’s the geography lesson of the day (check the map). Who knew a country one million strong with an economy weighing in at 0.2% of the EU could put the brakes on a fantastic first quarter run.
